Vintage Shawnee Cookie Jars are among the most popular in collectible antique cookie jars. Located in Zanesville, Ohio the Shawnee Pottery Company began operation in 1937, taking its name in part from a nearby village of Native Americans and the distinctive red clay from which they made pottery.
The site on which the Shawnee Pottery Company established itself was formerly that owned by Encaustic Tiling Company who was forced out of business during the depression.
However, the environment was perfect for pottery, and once the majority of kilns got replaced, Shawnee was ready to sweeten the cookie jar! The company hired many of the tile craftsmen who previously worked for Encaustic – so the talent pool was rich with creativity.
