Minneapolis North High School to Enroll 9th Grade Class in 2011
MINNEAPOLIS - Minneapolis Public Schools superintendent Bernadeia Johnson said she will recommend to the Board of Education that North High School enroll 9th grade students for the fall of 2011.
Johnson’s recommendation will officially come before the school board on Tuesday, May 10.
”I made this decision because I believe that the trajectory of North High is about to change drastically,” Johnson said. “We are definitely moving in a positive direction."
In November, it was recommended North High School enroll a freshmen class for the 2011-12 school year only if 125 students had registered to enroll by the end of March –a deadline later extended to April.
Minneapolis Public Schools has been working with the Institute for Student Achievement, a nonprofit that works to turn underperforming high schools into academically strong and personalized schools. ISA was originally brought in to focus on the design and re-launch of a new North High in 2012, but their efforts have been applied to current students and the incoming freshmen class.
Under the ISA consultation, each North 9th grader will be assigned a school advisor and community mentor. Students also will be offered internships with businesses and civic organizations to increase service learning opportunities.
North High School was in jeopardy of closing altogether last year. The district said a 75 percent decrease in enrollment over just six years put operating costs at nearly $4,000 per student, compared to the district average of $1,555.
Johnson said she was moved by the community’s response to a potential closing.
