WINTER: TONIGHT: SUNSET
Tonight at sunset walking on the snowy road,
my shoes crunching on the frozen gravel, first
through the woods, then out into the open fields
past a couple of trailers and some pickup trucks, I stop
and look at the sky. Suddenly: orange, red, pink, blue,
green, purple, yellow, gray, all at once and everywhere.
I pause in this moment at the beginning of my old age
and I say a prayer of gratitude for getting to this evening
a prayer for being here, today, now, alive
in this life, in this evening, under this sky.

The first day of winter
Can take us by surprise in Minnesota. A forecast of impending snow usually comes before the official calendar date of winter's arrival. This surprised robin must feel the way many Minnesotans feel when the season changes before the calendar does!
It is a common misconception that the earth is farthest from the sun in winter. The Earth is, instead, closest to the sun in December...winter in the northern hemisphere.
The winter solstice is the date with the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. That date/time will be between December 21 and December 22 each year in and thus the "official" start of winter in Minnesota.

| Winter by Lawanna Holt Winter is snowy and cold season. Christmas is in winter. Winter is when you get out for Christmas break. Winter is when you have hot chocolate with marshal mallows. Winter is the season for colds and sinus problems. Winter is when you have snow days. Winter is when you wrap up in your favorite warm blanket. Winter is like a very white Christmas, very wonderful. Winter is wonderful season. Winter is fun season because you can play in the snow. |
