A Note from The Virtual WallThe 1st Recon Bn Command Chronology for Sep 1968 reports that Patrol "Panama Hat" from 1st Plt, Bravo 1st Recon, was inserted at 070800H Sep and extracted at 091500H Sep. The patrol, consisting of nine men led by Corporal Harry Oneto, operated in the vicinity of grid ZO0556. The post-patrol report includes the following statements:
"The patrol suffered 1 USMC KNBC in an attempted river crossing.
"081000H ZO056569 In an attempted river crossing, the patrol [leader] was drowned while looking for a ford. The patrol conducted a search with negative results. A reaction force with divers was inserted to aid in the search. At 090930H, the divers located the body of the USMC KNBC. The patrol, the reaction force, and the USMC KNBC was (sic) extracted with[out] further incident."
