Can it really be 50 years?
There’s nothing like our half-century high school reunion and then-and-now photo comparisons to remind us that we’re older, perhaps less naïve, and hopefully wiser. And I know that we’ve all done things, gone places, and had experiences we never anticipated as we marched off the stage as new graduates back in 1958. For me, at least, the theme has been change.
I left North aimed at the ministry, but my goals changed and I graduated in 1961 from Hamline with a degree in biology and aspirations to be a doctor. However, my medical studies at Harvard Medical School were interrupted a year later by the opportunity to go to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, where the attraction of neuroscience research and receipt of a D. Phil. changed my directions again, from medicine to biomedical research. After three years at Harvard as a research fellow and instructor, I returned to Minnesota as an assistant professor in the U of M Zoology Department, never expecting that the department would be later dissolved and I would take up a position as a full professor in the medical school.
The stability didn’t last long, however, and, in 1983, I was appointed Assoc Dean in the Graduate School. The taste of academic administration led me in 1987 to begin a six-year stint as Vice Provost for Research/Dean of the Graduate School at the Univ. of Missouri-Columbia, then a two-year appointment as Academic Vice President at the Univ. of Maine, followed by three years as Executive Director of the GRE Program in New Jersey.
In 1999 I came full circle, rejoining my former college (Biological Sciences) at the U of M and my previous research field and some different administrative responsibilities. I’m currently in phased retirement, struggling to avoid the slippery slope of part-time (?) employment as Norwegian Centennial Interdisciplinary Chair and Director of International Programs for our college.
Update – I retired officially in August, 2009, but am continuing part-time (?), at least until November, 2010, in my chair and director positions. Norway remains my major focus. |
