Birchdale is a small town on the Canadian border between Baudette and International Falls. Our community is home to great fishing, hunting, and many other outdoor activities. Birchdale is a beautiful community with a great sense of connection to one another and a great sense of humor. Home to the annual 4th of July World's Greatest Potluck, bluegrass family band Sloughgrass, Annual Ice Fishing Tournament, Sturgeon Tournament, and Birchdale Pioneer Days.

History:
BIRCHDALE, a village in section 3 of T. 159N, R. 27W (Sault), was named for the many groves of white birch found there in early days, as suggested by Mae Whitney Buell. It was settled primarily by Scandinavians beginning in 1899; it had a station of the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway; its post office was first established in Itasca County in 1906 in the home of postmaster Herbert T. Whitcomb.

The Sloughgrass Family Band |
The Sloughgrass band, from Birchdale, Minnesota, is a family affair with Grandma Audrey Nelson setting the rhythm on the upright bass. Her two daughters, two sons-in-law and three of her grandchildren all join her in playing on a variety of instruments. The band's music is a blend of Bluegrass, Old-time, Scandinavian, Gospel, Country and Folk music. All of the group members take turns on the vocal and instrumental pieces.
Sloughgrass, a local family band, known for entertaining with a mixture of song and Minnesota humor named themselves from playing bluegrass tunes painfully slow - much like walking through the sloughgrass swamps surrounding their hometown of Birchdale.
Sloughgrass has been amazed in the eight years since they began playing of the opportunities that have arisen and the support they have received from the local communities of International Falls and Baudette. Many locals feel that they are a part of the band too from attending many events and celebrations together. It is obvious that when Sloughgrass performs they truly enjoy themselves!
