Not all is well in Hansen Land, but it could have been so much worse.
I was on the bad end of a pick-up truck / pedestrian collision last Thursday 12/15. The good news is that I did not hit my head, lose consciousness, nor am I paralyzed. Also good: my dear border collie Phoebe was not injured. The bad news is:
broken clavicle
3 broken ribs left front
2-3 broken ribs left back (heard conflicting reports)
2 hairline fractures right pelvis (1 anterior, 1 posterior)
hairline fracture sacrum olla

Amazingly, I was released from HCMC yesterday 12/18 (a testimony to my overall fitness I dare say). That said, it is an uphill path to full recovery; still lots of pain and limitations in mobility. I am walking with an offset cane. I am particularly concerned with regaining full mobility and strength on my left side. Broken ribs send out loud shouts, as you can imagine.

I am receiving amazing support from Steve (of course) and friends are chomping at the bit to help out.

Fran Linhart
Fran Linhart So sorry to hear this. You ARE in excellent shape and that will aid in your recovery. You have my wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
Kit Hansen
Kit Hansen And if I am careful, I can still play scales with my left hand. I'd be scared to do more for fear of straining my collar bone, but there is no doubt that my piano playing would benefit from prolonged attention to scales!
Anna Lain Allais
Anna Lain Allais Get well soon Kit, but be patient if it is not soon enough!
Good thing you are a reader: many good books out there that I don't have time to read ...

Leslie Vickery
Leslie Vickery OH NOOO! This is awful news - coffee, music, books and some gentle PT is the ticket. I'll call tomorrow - thank goodness for Steve and Phoebe.
Julia Dinsmore
Julia Dinsmore Holy Shit! Loving all dem bones from afar Kit. Healing come by you. <3
Deni Berigan-Pirro
Deni Berigan-Pirro So thankful that you are with us and healing - definitely good bones! And so glad that Phoebe is ok. How horrible and scary. Hugs and love!
Laura Daigen-Ayala
Laura Daigen-Ayala OHHHH! So sorry! How terribly scary!!! Sending you healing thoughts.
Wendy van Kerkhove
Wendy van Kerkhove OMG!!! I'm so sorry to hear about this but thank god you and Phoebe will be okay (kinda!). Did the driver stop? Was he not paying attention or were you in a blind spot?? Was Phoebe really scared?
Stephen Greenfield
Stephen Greenfield The driver did stop, and was apologetic. But Kit was out in the open, he just must have not been paying attention. I don't think Phoebe was frightened, more confused; neighbors took her across the street into a coffee shop. (Kit may add more tomorrow.)
Louise Rogness
Louise Rogness Kit, I'm so sorry to hear about this! Please let us know if you need anything at all.
Maia Gambis
Maia Gambis sending you

Biography

Happily married 41 years to a kind and intelligent guy who feeds me well. Blessed with amazing political activist daughter and son-in-law and an extraordinarily gregarious 4-year-old granddaughter.

Fortunate to have had a few meaningful careers - programmer, project manager (took me to India several times), and especially, academic writing instructor at the University of Minnesota where I specialized in teaching second language writers. I loved being my own boss, developing course materials, and stimulating students to think critically and to have confidence in their writing abilities.

MA's in Psycholinguistics and in Teaching English as a Second Language; research and publications about the impact of low-literacy level on oral second language acquisition.

Lived in Berlin, Germany when it was still West Berlin. Love contemporary classical music. Am trying to be more involved in actions countering racism (wasn't that what I was doing back in '66, too?).

Language: English · German · French · Spanish

Then & Now Photo

Oma (that's me - the German name for Granny) singing to my granddaughter Keila (born 5/30). My son-in-law graciously posted this saying that it quieted her. But it was only temporary. The problem wasn't my singing, though, I swear.

Thanks for stopping by today...
