My 1st Cousin
A reflection back
January 23rd, 2021
We grew up in North Minneaplis a few blocks apart. You could say we were very good friends. I was born in March and she in April of 1948 only 43 days apart. My mother and her sister were best friends. My cousin and I were together a lot in our earliest years. My mother loved my cousin a lot and my aunt loved me. We were both loved by two beautiful sisters. That's probably why I have tears rolling down my cheek right now. We graduated from Minneapolis North High School together in 1966. We shared the same homeroom in high school for three years. I didnt't miss one day of school and I don't remember her missing any school either. She was a much better student than I could have ever been. The only reason I graduated from high school was perfect attendance. The teachers felt sorry for me and passed me for the effort I made. My cousin, she was a lovely and beautiful person. She was kind and outgoing with a big heart. She chose to be very private in her later years. So I would assume she hates all the attention she's getting from me today. She had some underlying medical issues. She lived alone in Scottsdale Arizona. She was a widow. Life has been a rocky road for her. But you would never know that speaking with her. She always was strong enough to pick herself up and move on through life.
I'll give her an A+ for being one of the strongest women I know. Her family kept in contact with her constantly. The last time I had a vist with my cousin was 2 years ago. We missed our vist last year in Phoenix do to Covid-19. I look back on that with regret today. I talked to family members today and I put together this accounting of her last few days.
Friday January 15th, 2021 she went shopping at the grocery store. She had a conversation with her sister Kathy on Sunday the 17th. She was feeling a little tired at the time, but she was looking forward to their visit in a few weeks in Scttsdale.
On Monday the 18th in a conversation with her sister Caroline. "Cookie" for short, she seemed upbeat and fine which indicated that she was okay at that time. She made her last posting on Facebook at 2:14pm at Click Here
In a conversation on Tuesday the 19th of January 2021 with my aunt Gloria, one of her best friends, my cousin felt a little tired at the time and the word hospice came up in their conversation that day.
The family had no contact with her from that point as far as we know. She was not answering her phone on Wednesday the 20th.
Her two sisters became concerned and called authorities for help. The maintenance man from her apartment building unlocked her apartment door. Kathy her next door neighbor found her. They found her very early in the morning on the 21st of January 2021. The maintenance man said "He thought at first she was just sleeping in her favorite chair with her little dog by her side". Kathy my cousin's neighbor than called Clarrissa's sister Kathy back with the bad news. So she passed either on the day of the 20th or the evening of the 19th. In either case she died peacefully in her sleep.
She came this way but once. Yet, She touched our lives in many ways while she was here. We shall remain eternally grateful for her friendship and for the influence she bestowed upon us.
She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. We give thanks for Clarissa's life. Rest in peace my cousin and remember you are not forgotten while I am still on patrol. I cannot wait till we will see each other sittin' round the table again.
My dear departed cousin
I was standing by my window on this cold and cloudy day when I read the news. My eyes filled up with tears this day.
I could see that hearse come rolling for to carry her away.
Tears fall from my eyes; I can barely see, But my heart tells me that she will always be with me.
Your love will always be here to stay. You touched my heart with your kindness and love. My heart is filled with so much pain on this day, but I can hear myself say over and over again, God loved you more.
I will love and miss her forever, Until the day we are again together. Together in that perfect place above, Filled with caring, sharing, and love.
But until that day comes my dear cousin.
I will wipe my tears away.
Rest in Peace with peace of mind, Your memories will live on through.

Floyd,
Every day it seems that the world is
closing in on us a little more.
For the most part we don’t feel that
we are aging but reality tells us
otherwise. I am so sorry for your
loss and the sadness that will come
into your life and the lives of your
family. You have my sincerest
condolences. My thoughts and prayers
are with you and your family.
Jeff, Thanks for your kind words. You always lift me up with your kind thoughts. Your words make me reach back for a poem that comes to mind by Mary Frye 1932 called Autumn Rain it goes like this.
Autumn Rain
Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am that swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

Bonni Saice
Sorry to hear we lost another classmate!
Bonni, It seems to be a routine for me these days. Between the two websites that I maintain, it seems like I'm just doing memorial pages most of the time. This one seems to hurt a little bit more.
On my 1st Reconnaissance Battalion website I'll call attention to the Taps Section. I've completed 4 memorial pages this week plus I'm backed up with 2 more to complete for fallen Marine Brothers. This Covid-19 is really hitting us hard. I'm praying for all Marines and all Veterans that are in Veterans homes these days. You can always check out my website at: Click Here If you find yourself bored or want to be depressed. We have over 1550 members on the 1st Recon site and many around the same age. So in my opinion North High Class of 66' is doing pretty good and they're holding their own "knock on wood". But this memorial page has hit home for me. Take care Bonni and stay safe.
Comment from Bonni, Floyd You do such a beautiful job with memorials, so I’m sure it keeps you very busy! Sorry to hear of all of the deaths of your Marine and Veteran friends! I’m sure it is harder when it is a relative! Hope you and your wife are staying healthy and safe! I’m sure everyone will be happy to get back to some kind of normal life again!
