Mother's Day tribute photo to my mother Helen Elizabeth [Martin] Griffin (1914-1984)

Here reading to my older sister Nancie and me 1948-49. She was an old-fashioned mom who lived the values she taught us and loved us deeply. Sorry to my baby sister Mavis Weaver who is much younger and not yet "in the picture" here.

January 24, 1945, with dad fighting in the Philippines, my sweet mother Helen gave birth to a precious daughter Nancy Elizabeth Griffin. She was my older sister (I came along a couple years later) and I loved her dearly. She was super smart and musical and since we shared a tiny room in our inner-city house, we became close. She was my teacher and role model. As I entered school years and staff found out she was my older sister, they assumed I, too, would be at the top of the class. (I tricked them, eh?)

Nancy was killed in a motorcycle accident in August 1965 at age 20. She would today be 71 and I shared with my wife how sad I am that her life ended so young, and that she missed the blessings of all the last five decades.

But missed the sorrow too. God is wise, as well as loving. I rest confidently in His will.

January 1975 eating dinner on the roof of the church. We were having a contest to build attendance and I said that if we broke the record, I'd eat our church fellowship dinner the next Sunday on the roof. We did, and I did. But the ice/snow and steep pitch made two deacons worried, so they convinced me to just sit on the end of the ladder.

Good News? The local radio station was notified of this and reported live on the scene interviewing folks. Lots of publicity that this little country church (100 years old) was NOT dead, even if their pastor was crazy.

More Good News? First time at a church dinner where the jello didn't melt and run all over the tuna casserole. It was cold out there!!

1975 a couple of rowdy youngsters (Big Brother Jeremiah Griffin and Josh playing in the parsonage at Wild Rose, Wisconsin.
family pix from 1978 or so - at our home in the thriving metropolis of Wild Rose, Wisconsin (population 585 - we had 3 kids born there over the years and they didn't change the sign)
1978 and leaving Wild Rose Baptist. New church (Faith Baptist, Chetek, Wisconsin) wanted a "welcome pix", so remember we went to Oshkosh and had this pix taken.

Annual Meeting of Greater Wyoming Federal Credit Union today. I was re-elected to a third term on the Board, serving also as Education Director of the membership. Also serving another year on the Supervisory Committee. Pictured with GWFCU head Elizabeth Stetz CEO, a tireless worker who is concerned in the time of economic downturn for all of our members. With natural gas, coal and oil "in the tank" due to Washington politics, 2016 does not look like "hope and change" for Wyoming. All who attend the meeting get treated to a SHORT business session and a LONG lunch (with out-of-this-world barbecue and all the fixins') And door prizes of which I won one, so have some $$ to buy a valentine for my bride.

City of Casper, Wyoming - Website
It only takes a couple inches of snow (and 50 mph breeze) to create unreal road conditions in the wide open spaces and hills of Wyoming. This is Interstate 80 on the 50-mile stretch from Cheyenne (capital) to Laramie (university of Wyoming) highway in winter. Taken last year; just watching as another storm barrels in tomorrow.

Pillar of Light as the sun sets on 2015 in Casper. My pix didn't turn out as nice as Susie's, so borrowed hers.

Was looking for the Israelis marching through, following a Pillar of Cloud and Pillar of Fire. All I saw were folks bundled up and head down, seeking refuge from the cold.

CASPER, WYOMING Snow is common in this town and has occurred as early as September and as late as early June.
The average daily winter temperature is 22°F, and on average, 181 days of the year have temperatures at or below 32°F. Casper is among the top five most windiest spots in the nation. The prevailing winter wind blows from the southwest, with the emphasis on “blows.” Some wind gusts have been clocked at over 60 m.p.h. The wind has knocked tractor-trailers off interstates. As one native put it: “In the winter we have snow followed by wind, wind followed by snow, and wind and snow together. In some places the snow never hits the ground but gets worn out by the wind.” And the late Jean Shepherd wrote: “Let me tell you, you’ve never been in a blizzard until you’ve been in a real Wyoming screamer. The snow was coming down so fast and hard that I felt I was driving through a white tunnel. It got colder and colder, and my windshield was freezing up faster than the defrosters could blow it off.

Why root for San Diego to beat Denver? Okay, I'm a fair-weather Bronco fan; living in the Mountain West it is incumbent on me. I love Green Bay and the Vikings. But in the AFC I am pushing hard for the BENGALS. The Bengals (hobbled with fill-in QB) won today over the Ravens AND with a Denver loss, can clinch a first-round by. I think. I don't have my doctorate in football minutia. But that's how I'm cheering. Of course like every other American, I'm also for the Chiefs losing. And always for da Bears losing. And the . . . GO BOLTS!!
Today I received a package of animal crackers from sweet Pauletta Vawter (who has a burden to help the elderly and infirmed). I do not know WHY she went to this time and expense.  AND I can't enjoy eating them. They LOOK okay, but the package said not to eat any if I noticed that the seal was broken. And YES, the seal was broken.
