                            Title: Avignon - Oil on Canvas 23" x 36"

George Clarkson Stanfield was born on May 1, 1828 in London, England. He was a painter of landscapes, continental scenes, marines and scenes with mountains, rivers, lakes and streams. He was the son of the noted British artist, William Clarkson Stanfield.

He began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, London from 1844 to 1876 as well as at The British Institute and elsewhere.

Stanfield painted views in Northern France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, especially the Rhine and the Italian lakes. He also occasionally painted English coastal views.

Although he painted in a distinct and individual style, his works are sometimes confused with those of his father. He usually signed “George Stanfield” or “G.C. Stanfield” whereas his father usually signed “C. Stanfield RA.”

George Clarkson Stanfield died on March 22, 1878 in Hampstead, England.

Today, his works can be found in private and public collections, including in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia and in museums in Bristol, England and Montréal, France.

Charles Verbrugghe was born in Bruges, Belgium in 1877. He was a painter of still lifes, landscapes, town views, marines, flowers and portraits. He was born of Belgium aristocracy. In 1907, he went to Paris to study under the master teacher, Flori Van Acker. There, he became friends with the artists, Utrillo and Kees Van Dongen. During that time, he lived in a house in Montmartre and painted the quaint corners of Paris as well as portraits and still life paintings.

Thomas Baker was born on October 9, 1809 in the Midlands area of England. He was a landscape and animal artist and was also a watercolorist. He was known as Baker of Leamington. He was the best known, and probably the most accomplished, painter of the extensive Baker family of artists. He painted mainly landscapes in Warwickshire and the Midlands, often with sheep and cattle. Baker kept comprehensive records of his work. He usually signed each picture “T Baker” and numbered it on the back.

Views of the sea and beaches, landscapes and flowers. He was well known for painting the convents and city views of Bruges. Verbrugghe, an impressionist artist, utilized brilliant colors in his paintings and bathed his subjects in voluptuous light. He was highly influenced by the French impressionists he met in Paris. He died in Paris in 1974.

His diaries and notes, which contain a complete list of his works, are held in the Birmingham City Art Gallery. Thomas Baker exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1831 and 1858, but more frequently at the British Institution and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Today, Thomas Baker's works can be found in important private and public collections, worldwide, including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and museums in Birmingham, Leicester and Glasgow.
