Native Twin Citian, vocalist Diane Witherspoon makes a rare stop home for a gig this weekend, with two nights at the Artists Quarter. Sister of the late Shirley Witherspoon and a second cousin to bluesman Jimmy Witherspoon, Diane has been performing and recording on the West Coast and abroad for the past 30 years. Her local support team this weekend is worthy of it own gig -- Laura Caviani, Billy Peterson and Kenny Horst.

Biography

Studied English and Music at St. Olaf College - Spanish (language)
I am a professional singer; mostly and especially Jazz; I am also a composer, amateur pianist, and I am waiting for a great guy to spend my "golden" years with, must be independent and financially stable....any ideas? I travel each year to other countries to perform so I can support my creative and financial existence. I've been doing this for more than 20 years. I am also the proud mother of 3 GREAT young adults; Bill, Asha and Lila (short for "Dalila"). Currently, I am single, living alone and enjoying all that life has to offer me. God is GOOD!
Diane Witherspoon began singing as a child (with 8 siblings), and often performed in her church choir. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Diane attended Saint Olaf College and the University of Minnesota.
Diane has taught music and conducted workshops for students in California public schools and in Tokyo, Japan. Inspired by her sister, Shirley Witherspoon, a former Duke Ellington vocalist, and second cousin, Jimmy Witherspoon, a legendary blues singer, Diane was an international singer with over 20 years experience.

All Music Review by Alex Henderson
Thanking You may very well be Diane Witherspoon's most obscure album. Recorded for flutist Art Maxwell's Tonal Gravity label in 1989 and 1990, this CD had limited distribution and wasn't in print for very long -- many of Witherspoon's fans are unaware of its existence. Although not earth-shattering, Thanking You is a generally decent collection of live and studio performances. The live material was recorded at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, in December 1989 and March 1990, while the six studio tracks are from a July 1990 session in Hollywood, CA. Thanking You is the sort of disc that has one foot in post-bop jazz and the other in R&B -- Maxwell obviously wasn't catering to jazz purists or bop snobs when he released this CD in 1990. But those who hold jazz and R&B in equally high regard will enjoy the material, which ranges from performances of "When You Wish Upon a Star" and Buddy Johnson's "Since I Fell for You" to soul-minded Witherspoon originals like "Everlasting Memory" and "Yes, I'll Dare." The latter manages to be ethereal and gritty at the same time, not unlike some of the fusion that Lonnie Liston Smith recorded with his Cosmic Echoes in the '70s -- in fact, "Yes, I'll Dare" is a song that would have been perfect for Cosmic Echoes vocalist Donald Smith (Lonnie's brother) back then. It should be noted that the acoustic pianist on all of the studio tracks is the late Johnny "Hammond" Smith (no relation to Lonnie or Donald). Although Hammond was best-known for his organ playing, his contributions to this CD demonstrate that he was also a capable pianist. Thanking You isn't Witherspoon's most essential release, but hardcore fans will appreciate the album if they're able to track down a copy.

| Don't cry for me today,
I wouldn't want it this way. Be strong and smile, for you will see me in a while.
I know you miss me,
but now in Heaven I will be.
Do not keep your sad face, I am in a much better place.
Do not let your tears fall, for I cannot wipe them all.
Yes, my life wasn't long. But I'm begging you to be strong.
Live every moment as if it were your last, I won't forget any memories that have passed.
Don't cry for me today, I'm on my way. Soaring through the sky, I watch all of you telling me goodbye.
Love You All.....

Too hard for me to say goodbye
For all apparent reasons why
Even though we all know it must be
Each heart will someday stop the beat
When the rhythm of life, and silence, finally meet.
Yet I always seem so surprised
To find that death is part of life.
