Biography
|
Enlisting in the Navy in 1971, as an alternative to getting drafted. He served 8 years in the Navy's nuclear submarine program. Returning to civilian life, he eventually settled into the job of inspector for the Hartford Boiler Insurance Co. Jim was an avid fan of many things and an equally avid non-fan of many others - never shy of sharing his opinions. He loved his family and he loved sports, of all kinds. Bowling, golf and softball brought him much happiness, but fishing was his passion, especially at Spectacle Lake, near Cambridge, MN, where the family has a small cabin. The fish in "Spec" can now feel a little safer! |

A poem by Anon
Though we never know Where life will take us, I know it's just a ride On the wheel.
And we never know When death will shake us And we wonder how It will feel.
So Goodbye my friend. I know I'll never see you again.
But the time together Through all the years, Will take away these tears.
It's OK now - Goodbye my friend.
I see a lot of things That make me crazy, And I guess I held on to you, You could have run away And left - well maybe, But it wasn't time And we both knew.
So Goodbye My friend. I know I'll never see you again.
But the love you gave me Through all the years Will take away these tears.
I'm OK now - Goodbye my friend.

Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary is a 15-acre native plant reserve. It is the oldest public wildflower garden in the United States. Per its original charter, it is maintained in a wild rustic state, such as might have been encountered in early settlement times. The Wildflower Garden is owned, operated, staffed and maintained by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board. The Friends of the Wild Flower Garden work in conjunction with the Park Board but are an independent private nonprofit organization that provides volunteer and funding support. |
|
|
|
The Wildflower Garden consists of three main ecosystems; a wetland complex referred to as the "Woodland Garden," upland hardwood forest and oak savanna with some open prairie, together referred to as the "Upland Garden". With over 600 plant species and more than 130 species of resident and migratory birds found in the Wildflower Garden, this delightful public native plant reserve is a true haven for the flora and fauna of our region, as well as for the many people who visit it. It is maintained in a natural rustic state, not with defined beds and plantings, similar to the way it was in 1900. |
|
| |
|
|
In addition to native plants and birds, many other creatures call the Wildflower Garden home: Raccoons, chipmunks, rabbits, red foxes, woodchucks, red and gray squirrels, mice, shrews, voles, moles, bats, frogs, toads, turtles and snakes. Deer, muskrats, opossums, mink and skunk have all been spotted nearby and may be visitors in the Wildflower Garden as well, although perhaps, unwelcome. |

Lady's Slippers, You are not a true Minnesotan if you cannot recognize this flower or know its name. It is our State Flower! Showing up on a wide variety of sites within its range, from wet to dry and sunny to deep shade. From the broad open meadow and road ditches of the NW they migrate deep into shady bogs in the Cass Lake Area. They are increasingly available in the nursery trade at a demanding price for gardeners wanting to test their earth skills. Stories of thievery are still told. Remember on bitter cold winter nights, we are the only state that boasts an orchid as its emblem. |

Everywhere
There was no time to say goodbye. But this I ask - please do not cry. Remember me as you think best. Remember the happy times, but forget the rest.
Look for me and I'll be there, And you will find me everywhere: In the gentle touch of the breeze That cools the skin or swirls the leaves.
In the scent and color of flowers That gave me such happy hours. On sunny days, under sunny skies of blue, Just think of me, I'll be with you.
In winter when there's cloud or mist, The rain will give to you my kiss. As wood smoke lingers in the air, Look for me and I'll be there.
Where seagulls cry above the sea And surf rolls in so endlessly. Among towering trees that soar above, In all these things that I once loved.
Look for me and I'll be there. You'll feel my presence EVERYWHERE!
